Community Service

In keeping with its Spiritan mission of outreach, Duquesne students, faculty and staff are heavily involved in voluntary service and service-learning programs. In 2006-2007, 7,838 members of the Duquesne community volunteered 200,759 hours and raised more than $181,000 for more than 1,000 worthy organizations and agencies.

Duquesne is one of only 100 universities nationwide (only six in Pennsylvania) named to the federal government’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

Alumni can volunteer services on campus or within their community in the name of Duquesne University. Duquesne tracks the contribution of our alumni through the DUV (Duquesne University Volunteers) program.

Alumni around the globe are encouraged to participate in the DASH (Duquesne Alumni Serving and Helping) event. The Alumni Association is proud to sponsor this international community service initiative. During this weekend, alumni around the world are asked to volunteer in their neighborhoods, doing their service in the name of their alma mater. Alumni are invited to participate in the annual Spring Clean-up event in the neighboring Hill District and South Side area, and a campus clean-up.

Alumni interested in Public Service can volunteer in a number of ways:

  • Conduct events that celebrate & promote public service as a means of promoting social justice.
  • Develop a professional networking group among alumni employed in the public service sector.
  • Support the development of Duquesne students who are interested in learning more about public service, through mentoring, special events, classroom participation, and by providing internship and career opportunities.
  • Promote civic literacy among Duquesne students and alumni.

Read the University’s Community Impact Report for more details about past success; visit Duquesne University Volunteers to learn about current and future opportunities; or complete the Volunteer form or contact Alumni Relations to sign up or suggest ideas for new alumni-based initiatives.
